Not that I haven't tried. Every time I've attempted to order an item they've advertised, they've told me that the item advertised is a grey market item, and that it's out of stock. However, the official US Import item is in stock at a much higher price. This has happened at least a half dozen times. Now, I understand grey market pricing and all that as I work in retail myself. But it seems to me that they're just using this as a come-on. When you consistently don't have the item you're advertising, you give the impression of being somewhat less than ethical. My experience with New York, et al began in 1968 with a Nikormat purchase from the notorious "yellow pages" Olden. It's the sad tale of a 15-year old spending his last dime on the camera of his dreams only to receive the item with a damaged/separated front element. Four months of wrangling and a threat from Dad's powerful friend in NYC finally got the lens fixed "locally" in New Orleans (we were in Vicksburg, MS at the time). Let's have a show of hands from all of you fellow HUG'ers that just fell off the turnip truck.... There is, with scarce exception, no compelling reason to order from those "magazine" houses if one is currently online. Several sterling companies appear from time-to-time and they number among them our friends at B&H, Tamarkin, Ghittleman, Heitz etc. Please, please visit Jeff Albro's IMPACT site for additional sources of camera equipment. Therein, check Greenspun's photo.net site and read the neighbor-to-neighbor comments on the whole raft of mail-order photographic retailers. It reads like a fraud prosecutor's case log. With the internet, the world has shrunk to the size of a pea (or maybe a 15" screen). I routinely order from around the world absolutely effortlessly for bits and pieces at sometimes ridiculously good prices. Caveat: I almost never purchase new. There's so much As-New stuff out there if one is patient. I've bought from Adorama and B&H - I've been very pleased with their professional attitudes and I paid significantly less than I would have locally. I've also bought items from Smile, Family Photo and others who seem to specialize in grey market and, in some cases, what might be considered borderline "bate and switch" - You DO get great prices but it requires a firm resolve to stick with EXACTLY what you want and nothing else (no $50 batteries, or $40 no-name filters...also make sure you ask if the item is grey market and watch out for those shipping charges). For Hassy equipment there is simply only one choice...And I found out about it through this user group! CAYMAN CAMERA. I have always been AMAZED at how much lower their prices are than ANY other dealer (at least on Hassy gear) ...I mean hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars less than the "cheap" mail order companies. Every business transaction I've had with them has been a polite, haggle-free, wonderful experience with great communication and no surprises! Again, I hope I haven't just shot myself in the foot...But seeing as it was this user group that turned me on to Cayman Camera I feel like I have an obligation to make sure other "newbies" know about this wonderful resource. So, therefore making a plan becomes impossible. One's conclusion is based upon one's prior experiences and therefore one can make a plan w/o the benefit of anything said herein (about where to buy equipment, that is) not about technique. But it does make interesting bathroom reading, though. >> Now that's an interesting opinion you've got there: i.e. let's just ignore everyone else's prior experience and buy at Smile because you said so. Also, perhaps we've been reading different groups. I don't see "many divergent opinions" regarding Smile at all. In fact, other than yours, I see unanimity of opinion that Smile is a place to consider avoiding. That certainly is suggested by the horror stories of some buyers listing their experiences on the Community section at www.photo.net. The exact web page is www.photo.net/neighbor/opc.tcl?category_id=0 The bottom line for me is that you have the right to spend your own money wherever and however you please. You also have the right to extol your own "opinion"of Smile Photo's virtues. I suppose you even have the right to try to get us to help you score brownie points with Smile. In a prior post, you said in part: "Also, try Smile also in N.Y. Call on the phone and insist on dealing with MENDEL "Mike". Tell him the lawyer from Miami referred you." Other people, however, have the right to state their own opinions and experiences. If you want your own opinions respected, you might consider respecting other peoples' opinions based upon their own experiences with the same outfit. Certainly, you have every right to ask us to call Smile and tell "Mike" that you sent us. Group members, however, have the right to wonder just exactly where you're coming from and why. Just some more "interesting bathroom reading" for you. ------------------------------ End of hasselblad V1 #1007 ************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hasselblad Users Group Listserv is a public service of Absolute Internet, Inc., which is not responsible for its content.
