At the baggage check in the lady told that if the film in my "Nice Camera" (An R-8) was 400 asa or higher I should ask for a hand inspection. This is the first time they have ever done this. He said that if the x-ray machine had a color screen (the new type I guess) it was safe to let film up to 1600ASA go through it, where as the older versions with only B/W screens it was OK to let up to 400ASA pass through it. I'd take that with a pinch of salt, and I'll still go by the expression "Better safe then sorry".
