I signed off the other day because I ended my use of my Hasselblad, but now I am back seeking advice on the best way to sell my gear. I bought the bulk of it 20 months ago and have shot maybe 75 rolls through it. Since then and I have found that having two kids ages one and three and attending night school for an MBA leaves no time to shoot. Obviously, I would like to get the maximum amount I could for the gear, but I'd also prefer not to drag it out by selling piece by piece. It's all in barely used condition (was all bought new) and some filters, etc. were never used. I have all the original boxes and paperwork. I did get a quote from the store at which I bought most of it. They offered about one third of what I paid for it. While I didn't expect to get most of my money back, I wouldn't mind getting a little more than that (I assume that's a viable wholesale quote). Between 40% and 50% of what I paid would be fine with me if that's a realistic retail price. So should I do one of the following, or something else? 1. Take the offer from the store where I purchased it? 2. Attempt to sell it on ebay (as a lot, or piece by piece)? 3. Try some other stores? 4. Any other suggestions? Here's the equipment, and if anyone on the List is interested, of course I am open to offers. I'll apologize in advance because I'm sure the columns won't look as straight when you receive this as they do here. Never seem to anyway. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out or would like to purchase. For the record, this is my first (and last) "for sale" post to the List. (was: RE: Selling Gear - Need Advice) Message-ID: <000201c0557b$d038dde0$412b4b0c@TEHELLW> [this was sent from a non-subscribed email address - Dan C.] Thank you to everyone who replied so far to my query for both the advice and the interest. The number one question I'm being asked (for obvious reasons) is the price I'd like to get. Since I promised not to clutter the list with this, this will be my only response to the group on the subject and serves to clarify the price which I should have done originally. Probably best to respond to me offline. Also, I screwed up my re-subscription last night, but have fixed it, so if you responded only to the List and it was before 9:00 a.m. Central this morning, I didn't get it. Directly to me or after that then I have it. As far as sale venue goes, I've decided to first offer it to this List. As I said, my number one choice is to sell it as a lot, so I will sell this lot for the first offer I receive for $4000 firm. That represents 45.3% of what I paid after rebates but before tax or shipping and a 24.4% discount on the prices listed below. Incidentally, I'll pay shipping via FedEx standard whether it's one piece or all (I get a little discount). If this fails I'll go ebay or KEH or whatever. If the above offer for the whole lot is not met by 5:00 p.m. central time on Tuesday 11/28 (to give all a chance to return from the holiday), I will sell it piece by piece to any individuals from who I have received offers (first come first served) who meet the prices below. They represent 60% of the price I paid, figuring I'll probably end up stuck with some of it. I believe I'm pricing below market, but if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will let me know. I've added the prices to the descriptions in the original message below (and chopped out most of the message). If you've already made the first offer and it's at or above the price below, I'll give you the price below (if the lot doesn't sell). If I may make a sales pitch for a couple items, the B2 monoball is the coolest thing on earth. It pivots on all axes, so for a level shot you don't need to level the tripod. You just loosen up the axes and level the camera with the spirit level, then tighten them all up. If you're not shooting exactly level, you can just gross level the tripod, level the camera and then change the one axis you need (i.e. pitch). Also, the Gossen meter allows a novice (me) to meter like a pro. I really won't complain if I get stuck with these two items as I'll probably continue to rent a Hassy on occasion and they'll come in handy. Thanks to all on this List who have offered me advice and knowledge of over the last three years or so. I don't want any ill will with the List since I'll probably be back some day, so I'll refund any money if you don't believe the item is as I've described, but I doubt that will be a problem because I've tried to be conservative. Tom Hellwig (636) 477-0479 P.S. Regarding "first offer" if you've already expressed an interest were first to do so and now back it up with an offer (for the lot or individually) I will consider you "first" based on your original email. -----Original Message----- From: Tom Hellwig [mailto:378139822@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Thursday, November 23, 2000 12:33 AM To: 'hasselblad@kelvin.net' Subject: Selling Gear - Need Advice I have been on this list for a little over two years. Not that I'm a digital basher, far from it. I just can't afford any of the digital cameras that can compete with film, especially medium format. When I can afford one, I'll probably have one. Between 40% and 50% of what I paid > would be fine with me > if that's a realistic retail price. Well, you started out right by listing it here. Selling to a store will, at best get you only 60% of what the store figures they can get reselling the equipment. That's not a bad price, really, considering the stores usually have to offer some sort of money back guarantee and a warranty to their customers. They also have to figure in how long the equipment will sit on their shelves waiting for a buyer. They need a return on their investment to stay in business. If you can't get satisfactory prices here, perhaps you should reconsider selling your equipment piece-by-piece on eBay. Be sure to describe it accurately and provide good pictures of each item you place on auction. I've seen many items sell for more than retail (used prices) on eBay, and this could well maximize the amount you get for them. To insure quick, safe transactions, I would recommend that you become a registered and verified user of PayPal and that you specify the use of PayPal in your auctions. Of course, there's no risk in accepting money orders and bank drafts but being a verified PayPal user will give many potential buyers a very warm fuzzy feeling about dealing with you, especially if they too are PayPal verified users. Sorry to have taken so many words for this. Peter Peterson Is Zeiss made in German going to be better than Zeiss made in Japan. The actual operation of a Contax 645 would be so much different than ANY configuration of Hasselblad: low tech to high tech that the difference would be like apples and orages; day and night. Instead of compare glass.... Compare the operation of a 200 series Blad with winder and low eyepoint finder and A32 back. It's NOT going to operate like, feel anything like ANY 645 camera i e: Pentax, Mamiya, Contax. But the Contax glass is Zeiss and i don't think the "made in Japan" is going to make any difference. AND the Contax glass will fit on their new 35mm format N1 system. I could get into Contax 645. But i would never expect it to replace my Hasselblad system. I'd use it for different things. Certainly less Tripod orientated stuff. I use a tripod with my Hasselblads more than half the time. mark rabiner :) http://spokenword.to/rabiner/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 19:30:18 -0600 From: "Tom Hellwig" <378139822@worldnet.att.net> To: Subject: RE: Prices! Since then and I have found > that having two kids ages one and three and attending night school for an > MBA leaves no time to shoot. Unless you NEED the money, why sell? Keep it. (My 'Blads are 30 years old, have had thousands of rolls through them, and are still going strong.) Pack it safely away, because in a couple of years you'll have your MBA, your children will be older and not quite as demanding, and you'll have the time to start taking pictures again, and a 35mm point-n-shoot just won't hack it. -- Patrick Bartek NoLife Polymath Group bartek@pdai.com ------------------------------ End of hasselblad V1 #1058 ************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hasselblad Users Group Listserv is a public service of Absolute Internet, Inc., which is not responsible for its content.
