It's a PIII 600MHz with 256 megs of RAM, 10GB hard drive, Windows 98SE. He had Dell substitute a CD-RW, a Sony I think, for the regular CD. It has PCMCIA, of course, and USB, both of which he uses with the Olympus E-10 digital camera and Camedia dye sub printer. It has external ports for a mouse and monitor, too. He's very happy with it. Original cost: $2400 US. I don't think Dell makes that particular model anymore, but I sure they have something to suit your needs. My friend basically had them custom configure the model he got to satisfy his requirements. -- Patrick Bartek NoLife Polymath Group bartek@intermind.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 16:24:41 -0700 From: David Gerhardt To: hasselblad@kelvin.net Subject: Re: a laptop question --am seeking one to download photos in the field? Back picked the name "Zoomar" for his company, I guess, due to the "zoom" concept though the lenses he was producing were not what we now call "zoom" lenses -- they were multi-focal-length lenses, as they had to be refocused when the focal length was changed. Of course, the REAL question here is: if I attach a Zoomar to my 40mm Distagon, will it finally have the Bokeh of the SWC? ;-) = 0000,0000,DEB7 Gill = Sans3535,4747,8787-David Gerhardt American = Typewriter(davidgerhardt@mindspring.com)= --Apple-Mail-495707948-3-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 00:16:19 -0400 From: "Eugene A. For instance, I can use an Adaptec PCMCIA adapter connected to an external SCSI drive. There are external cases to connect a drive through a printer port. My HP notebook cost less than $600US. Just a thought. It is a very reliable combination running on Win98SE. Using it in a car is possible, but the external power supply has to run of one of these 12VDC to 220VAC converters. So, using it in the field seems possible with the addition of a car battery and power converter. Maybe something can be rigged to have the drive run straight from a battery ? Do external scsi drives also have external power supplies ? If so, I would prefer the use of a notebook with internal CD-RW drive.
