Been too busy to add my additional two cents worth until now. There are clearly two camps in the debate: Those who go 'by the numbers' and patiently explain how film adds up to superior enlargements. and Those who are selling enlargements to satisfied customers. I'll thank Waldo for articulating the second point of view. I was in the first camp until recently. Over the past two months I found myself looking at prints of 16x20, 20x24, and 30x40 (!) inches of fine, *sellable* (Waldo hit on the key word) quality sourced from Fuji S1 and Canon D30 cameras and the mathematical certainties began to seem immaterial. I suspect that if a side by side comparison is made between one of these digicams and a Hasselblad using good film and processing, the film would win. In most respects, we photographers have a more critical eye than *most* of the people who will view (and perhaps, buy) our work. But, for those of us who want to make paying customers happy AND keep our overhead down, the siren call of digital is very seductive. Actually, this reminds me of the debate that raged when digital audio was introduced to the market. The numbers folks offered cogent arguments in support of analog processes and in decrying the "artificial sound" of digital. They were correct, of course, but since most people can't hear the difference the theory makes . . . well, the only stores selling black vinyl records in my area have used ones. New ones are pretty had to come by. All, IMO, FWIW./Scott Gardner BTW, if anyone knows where I can get ahold of a DCS560 for a reasonable price, please let me know. ;-) > Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 17:09:05 -0500 > From: "Waldo Berry" > To: > Subject: Re: Digital camera for Hasselblad owners > Message-ID: > > After coming back from leave, i was supprised at the discussion on = > digital.
