Daniel, You can see some full-size images from this camera at http://www.photo.net/photo/digital/canon-eos1d In my opinion, the images are comparable to medium format only in the loosest sense. It is a camera for those who value (and get paid for) speed over ultimate quality, i.e.: the working press. In one of the more unusual requests of my three years in aerial photography, a client wants a night time photo of the coastline of Humboldt Bay at the lowest tide of the year, New Year's eve, about 7pm, after dark. He will place targets on the ground which I will photograph in daylight for reference. Then after dark, a ground team will pound stakes at the low water line with attached flashlights pointing up. Lights will also outline the reference targets. The night photo will be taken at the same altitude as the daylight photo, so the targets can be lined up in the two photos. (I could have just said I was taking pictures of flashlights from 2000 feet, but the project is wierd enough that I've included this long description.) Anyway the ELM will be in a tried and proven vertical mount in a Cessna 182, but I'm not sure what film or exposure to use. Some Delta 3200 and infrared film is on the way from B&H. I will probably use the outstanding 100/3.5 lens. The 80 with an extra 2/3 stop would be nice but that lens is hopeless wide open. Would appreciate any ideas. Regards, Gary Todoroff Eureka, CA www.northcoastphotos.com >> According to Modern Photography's "The Jiffy Calculator for Night-Light Exposures," published in 1964, scene #13 is for outdoor Christmas trees, home and building decorations, which seems to correspond approximately to flash-lights pointed up. For 3200 speed film, the calculator recommends1/125 sec @ f.2.8, 1/60 @ f/4, 1/30 @ f/5.6, etc. But the aircraft is moving, right? It's not a helicopter? I'm not sure you can do it unless you can push the film a couple of stops and use a faster shutter speed. I am guessing. I have done some aerial photography, but never at night. Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion. Best regards anyway. Or 800 color print film pushed two stops. I personally cannot stand Delta 3200 as it is more like an 800 film pushed to the limit to reach 3200. I would rather use Tri-X or Neopan 400 pushed to 1600. Accufine easily pushes Neopan 400 to 1600. Anyway, experimentation ahead of time is the key, as you know very well... :) Jim At 10:14 PM 12/26/2001 -0800, Gary Todoroff wrote: >Mostly lurking lately, but here's a question. All of my photography is done using Kodak High Speed Infrared film. This is a fantastic film with only one major drawback. It is not available in 120 format. Only 35mm. In the 120 format there is the Ilford SFX.....which sorry to say, I don't like. Not enough magic for me there. Are there any other alternatives? I have heard that black and white infrared is available in 70mm and with a 70mm back it is possible to use in on a Blad. I would be interested to hear if anyone has experience in doing this and what would be your recommendations........ Thank-you.........and Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year to Everyone.
